Commodification
Thursday, November 11, 2010
Tourism has indeed been a culprit in commodifying cultures and traditions of Dubai, however this is not prominent as there are not many indigenous groups in Dubai.
But, some traditions and cultures such as camel racing has become one of the main reasons why tourist travel to Dubai. Camels racing were staged in an informal settings, at weddings or special events. But now, racing tracks were built, new camels were bought in to attract more entrants from all over the world.
In general, many rural communities rely on their culture such as buildings, music, architecture as a main feature for tourism development. In fact, their local culture and tradition has become a leading "attractor" in drawing travellers to their country. Local culture has been increasingly being objectified and commodified to attract tourists to the destination.
