The "Disney" in the modern society of Dubai
Wednesday, November 24, 2010

As we know that Dubai is well-known for it's impressive architecture, there are many future developments that are currently taking place.

Globalisation has disneyfied many cities in the world and Dubai is one of them. One of the current development that is taking place in Dubai is the Dubailand. It has helped to raise awareness of a new "Disneyland" in Dubai and also make Dubai even more impressive and unique.

So what is Globalisation? Globalisation refers to the process of integration across societies and economies. This phenomenon encompasses the flow of products, services, labour, finance, information and ideas moving across national borders. (Reference for Business. (n.d.). The result of Globalisation has led to changes in the society and culture of people. Take the example of Dubailand,it has 7 themes (Worlds): Theme parks, culture & art, science & planetariums, sports & sports academies, wellbeing & health, shopping & retail and resorts & hotels.

Under theme parks of Dubailand, it breaks down further into 5 different sections such as Dubai Wheel-which will be larger than London Eye, Aqua Dunya-which is a water-based theme park, Dreamland- where animation cartoon characters come to life and it also has a themed hotel, Hit Entertainment- where is works as an educational centre that brings in cartoon characters like Barney and Bob the Builder into life, and lastly the SIX FLAG theme park- which aims to develop Dubai into a leading global hub for tourism and leisure.

Features cultural facilities based on famous sites and the architectural marvels of the world, such as the Pyramids and Eiffel Tower.

Dubailand, twice as big as Disneyland.

Provides state-of-the-art facilities for the promotion, understanding and research of Space, Natural and Human Sciences, as well as Islamic Culture, Arts and Literature. It includes a multi-purpose stage, International Cultural & Scientific Centre, exhibition area, museum, labs and other relevant facilities.

Dinosaurs-themed park featuring more than 100 animatronic dinosaur replicas in a lifelike environment, recreating the sights and sounds of 1 million B.C.

Besides the theme which is closely related to Disney, Dubailand also provides relaxing spa and wellness facilities in the Resorts, such as the Themed Leisure and Vacation World. It has the largest shopping mall in Dubai called Mall of Arabia, so besides entertainment and relaxation, tourists could also do some shopping in Dubailand. This has covered the dimension on Hybrid Consumption.

Under merchandising, Dubailand has themed shops selling souvenirs such as Shrek, Spiderman and even Seasame Street.

Due to Globalisation, it has made everything possible. From the one and only Disneyland in California, to the Disneyland in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, even Beijing has a Theme Park which imitates Disneyland.

How has Globalisation done that? Through internet, people are interconnected. People surf the net to check out the places of interest of a country. Ideas are posted up on the net and others modify it. Globalisation has shrink the world in terms to time to travel, which causes more people to travel around the world. As they travel around the world, they spread word of mouth of the country's attraction, hence attracting more tourists to the country.
