Dubai!
Sunday, December 5, 2010

After doing much of my research on which city or country is suitable for my project, I have finalized and decided it to be Dubai!

Dubai-United Arab Emirates(UAE)

I have chosen this emirate for my project because there have been many development projects going on, therefore I believe that there will be many topics for me to reflect on.

A brief introduction of how Dubai is like through photos...

"The scenic view of Dubai"

"Dubai International Airport 2 & 3"

In the next post, I will talk more about their culture, tradition, people, languages, education and leisure programmes.

Culture, Tradition and People of Dubai

Culture

The culture in Dubai is very diverse. Culture of Dubai is predominantly Islamic, with religion touching all aspects of everyday life in the country. However, the UAE (United Arab Emirates) is tolerant and welcoming to foreigners who do not practice the religion of Islam. Expatriates are free to practice their own religion, alcohol is served in hotels and the dress code is liberal. Women don't face discrimination. Courtesy and hospitality are highly prized virtues of Dubai. The serving of freshly ground Arabic coffee flavoured with Cardamon is a sign of welcome.(Retrieved from Fact Sheet Dubai: Culture and Traditions: http://www.dubaiupdate.co.uk/downloads/factsheets09/Dubai%20Culture%20and%20Traditions.pdf)

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city and visitors can dress however they like. Still, there should be respect towards the customs of the locals customs. In deference to local customs and norms, it is preferred for visitors not to wear very short, tight clothing, at least until such time as they are comfortable with the city. UAE nationals usually wear their traditional dress, which is indeed a symbol of national pride and identity. (Middle East Hub. (n.d.). Retrieved from Dubai Culture: http://www.middleeasthub.com/dubai/culture/language-and-religion.html)

Normally tourist photography is acceptable and expected with all the beautiful things to photograph in Dubai. In general, photographs of government buildings, military installations, ports and airports should not be taken. Like anywhere, it is polite to ask permission before photographing people. It is considered offensive to photograph Muslim women.

Ramadan is the month of fasting when Muslims refrains from all food, drinks and smoking from dawn to dusk. As a sign of respect, visitors are also requested to refrain from all these items in public places except in the hotels, where customers maybe seated behind screens so as not to cause offence. (Retrieved from Fact Sheet Dubai: Culture and Traditions: http://www.dubaiupdate.co.uk/downloads/factsheets09/Dubai%20Culture%20and%20Traditions.pdf)

Alcohol is served in licensed premises like restaurants and bars. It is also served in a few recreational clubs. Shisha pipes are smoked at most establishments. They are traditional water pipes that use flavored tobaccos like strawberry or apple. Shisha is usually enjoyed while sitting at a café or restaurant.

Tradition

The Arab national dress worn in Dubai is particularly suitable for the high temperature and religious beliefs of the region.
For men, they wear the dishdasha or khandura, a white full-length shirt-dress. It is worn with a white or red checked headdress known as a gutra. In public, women wear the black abaya, a long black robe that covers their normal clothes. They also wear a headscarf.

Arabic cuisine comprises many types of cooking from countries like Morocco, Egypt, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Tunisia, and more. Throughout the city, vendors sell shawarma, a hot sandwich with lamb or chicken, carved from a rotating spit and served in pita bread with vegetables. A variety of juices from pineapple, banana, mango, or a mixed cocktail can be ordered from fresh juice vendors.

People

Dubai once was a land of Bedouins. The Bedouins in Dubai lived on fishing and pearl searching. The coral and gypsum courtyard houses were once the main accommodations available in Dubai. These houses were mainly built by the Persian traders. Bedouin fishermen and pearl divers in Dubai mainly lived in huts made of palm-fronds. (Maps of the World. (n.d.). Retrieved from Dubai Lonely Planet: http://www.mapsofworld.com/dubai/dubai-lonely-planet.html)

Part of Bedouins, the Bani Yas tribe is well-known for the patronage of, and involvement in literary arts. They are also renowned for their generosity, hospitality and chivalry and gradually these became a part of Dubai's culture.

Unlike nationals of other countries, the indigenous people of the UAE are less likely to be referred to by others or refer to themselves by their nationality. The people of every Arab state could be identified by the name of their state: the Egyptians, Iraqis, Saudis, etc. Up till now, there are no commonly used terms to identify the people of Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjag.

All the people of UAE are known as Emirati, the common name for all.

The "Disney" in the modern society of Dubai
Wednesday, November 24, 2010

As we know that Dubai is well-known for it's impressive architecture, there are many future developments that are currently taking place.

Globalisation has disneyfied many cities in the world and Dubai is one of them. One of the current development that is taking place in Dubai is the Dubailand. It has helped to raise awareness of a new "Disneyland" in Dubai and also make Dubai even more impressive and unique.

So what is Globalisation? Globalisation refers to the process of integration across societies and economies. This phenomenon encompasses the flow of products, services, labour, finance, information and ideas moving across national borders. (Reference for Business. (n.d.). Retrieved from Globalisation: http://www.referenceforbusiness.com/management/Ex-Gov/Globalization.html)

The result of Globalisation has led to changes in the society and culture of people. Take the example of Dubailand,it has 7 themes (Worlds): Theme parks, culture & art, science & planetariums, sports & sports academies, wellbeing & health, shopping & retail and resorts & hotels.

Under theme parks of Dubailand, it breaks down further into 5 different sections such as Dubai Wheel-which will be larger than London Eye, Aqua Dunya-which is a water-based theme park, Dreamland- where animation cartoon characters come to life and it also has a themed hotel, Hit Entertainment- where is works as an educational centre that brings in cartoon characters like Barney and Bob the Builder into life, and lastly the SIX FLAG theme park- which aims to develop Dubai into a leading global hub for tourism and leisure.

Features cultural facilities based on famous sites and the architectural marvels of the world, such as the Pyramids and Eiffel Tower.

Dubai-wheel. It will be larger than London Eye.

Dubailand Snowdome

Dubailand, twice as big as Disneyland.

Provides state-of-the-art facilities for the promotion, understanding and research of Space, Natural and Human Sciences, as well as Islamic Culture, Arts and Literature. It includes a multi-purpose stage, International Cultural & Scientific Centre, exhibition area, museum, labs and other relevant facilities.

Dinosaurs-themed park featuring more than 100 animatronic dinosaur replicas in a lifelike environment, recreating the sights and sounds of 1 million B.C.

Besides the theme which is closely related to Disney, Dubailand also provides relaxing spa and wellness facilities in the Resorts, such as the Themed Leisure and Vacation World. It has the largest shopping mall in Dubai called Mall of Arabia, so besides entertainment and relaxation, tourists could also do some shopping in Dubailand. This has covered the dimension on Hybrid Consumption.

Mall of Arabia.Middle East Architecture. (n.d.). Retrieved from The Dubai Mall: http://www.middleeastarchitecture.com/Building/3171/The-Dubai-Mall.php

Under merchandising, Dubailand has themed shops selling souvenirs such as Shrek, Spiderman and even Seasame Street.

Due to Globalisation, it has made everything possible. From the one and only Disneyland in California, to the Disneyland in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, even Beijing has a Theme Park which imitates Disneyland.

How has Globalisation done that? Through internet, people are interconnected. People surf the net to check out the places of interest of a country. Ideas are posted up on the net and others modify it. Globalisation has shrink the world in terms to time to travel, which causes more people to travel around the world. As they travel around the world, they spread word of mouth of the country's attraction, hence attracting more tourists to the country.

Changes brought about by the growth of tourism in Dubai
Monday, November 15, 2010

Dubai is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing tourism markets in the world, steadily attracting visitors from across the globe. Dubai's favourable geographic location, its excellent infrastructure and air connectivity, world-class hospitality facilities and wide array of attractions for tourists, has made it a top-choice destination for visitors. Its tourism sector has maintained steady growth over the years due to all these factors and also the strong support and guidance of its visionary leaders. (Travel and Tourism News Middle East. (2010, October). Retrieved from Dubai continues growth as tourism hotspot: http://www.ttnworldwide.com/articles.aspx?id=1460&artid=10335)

Dubai is seeking to develop a future economy that will not be dependent upon oil revenue and where inward investment and tourism will co-exist.At the heart of the destination's expansion from a transport perspective has been Emirates Airline, with its massive expansion plans, routing long-haul flights via Dubai and as a final destination. Dubai aims to attract 15 million tourists this year, and the US$15 billion expansion of Emirates Airline fleet and US$4 billion expansion of Dubai International Airport are part of the infrastructure to facilitate that growth.

To drive tourism growth in Dubai, the city recognizes it needs world-class visitors attractions as part of its tourism capacity. Therefore Dubailand is created to appeal to a diverse range of visitors.

In order to boost cruise tourism, Dubai has launched the new cruise terminal which tourist arrivals is expected to increase to 325,000 in 2010, after last year's 260,000 tourist arrivals.

New Cruise Terminal of Dubai.(2010, January 17). Retrieved from Dubai's cruise industry poised for growth: http://www.ameinfo.com/221361.html

With the Theme Parks developed, shorter flight durations, with Emirates Airlines flying to more destinations, 30 tax-free shopping malls, these have made Dubai a thriving tourism resort.

Besides having changes upon the infrastructures, the Culture of the locals has also been neglected. Although there are activities to conserve some of the remaining heritage sites in Dubai, the absence of social life and social continuity makes it a place that could be conceived as disconnection from its associations with Dubai culture and society.

Despite the large number of museums in Dubai, heritage has never been the focus of tourism product.

Some other negative changes that Tourism has brought into Dubai are:

- pollution due to all the future development projects,

- Prostitution as an effort to keep the workers in Emirate, as well as to attract more tourists. Hence they engage in prostitution trafficking which create a flood of 'prostitutes' in Dubai to keep men entertained. Dubai is also a place full of young single corporate men who do visit the prostitute houses too! As Dubai has became a "hot spot" for tourism, many tourists travel to Dubai mainly for the open prostitution.

- Greed is also a phenomenon when Dubai brings in more revenue and the locals get more wealthy. Wherever you go, people just talk about money and nothing.

Each coin has got both sides. So what are the positive changes that Tourism has brought into Dubai?

-Media which allows Dubai to be well-known internationally.

-Cultural Change to the sectors of economy The Emiratis who are working in the industry that they thought they wound never work in. It has allow Emiratis to be more optimistic that they actually are able to get better jobs.

-Greater Efficiency in Transportation. In the past, camels were traditionally used by the Emiratis as transport, and they are still currently being used in some parts of Dubai which also indicates that the culture of Dubai has not been totally affected by the growth of tourism. Now, Dubai even has international airports, buses, taxi, abra (small motorboatss) and Metro.
